Ostrog Monastery is the most important pilgrimage site in Montenegro and one of the largest in the Balkans. It is set carved into the vertical cliff of the Ostroška Greda mountain, at an altitude of 900 m. It is visited by about one million believers a year — not only Orthodox, but also Catholics and Muslims, because Saint Vasilije is believed to heal.

⛪ History

The monastery was founded by Metropolitan Saint Vasilije Ostroški (1610–1671), who, fleeing from the Turks, found refuge in a cave in Ostroška Greda. There he lived for 15 years as a hermit, built two small churches in the rock, healed the sick. He is buried in the monastery. His relics are still kept today in the Upper Monastery — object of great veneration.

🏛️ What to see

  • Upper Monastery (900 m) — main sanctuary. Two small churches carved into the rock: Church of the Holy Cross (upper) and Church of the Presentation (lower, with relics of St Vasilije). Pilgrims sleep on outdoor benches (free) to pray.
  • Lower Monastery (840 m) — Church of the Holy Trinity (19th c.), arhondarik (guesthouse), restaurant, souvenir shop. Many pilgrims leave cars here and walk up on foot.
  • Hiking path Lower → Upper monastery — 3 km, 1 hour walk. Pilgrims often climb barefoot as penance.
  • View from the Upper Monastery — spectacular, of the Zeta valley.
